This national drug and alcohol awareness campaign began in the 1980’s to honor the memory and sacrifice of DEA Agent Enrique (Kiki) Camarena. Enrique graduated from a California high school in 1966. After serving in the Marine Corps for 2 years, Enrique became a civil servant. He served in various capacities, first as a firefighter, then police officer, deputy sheriff, and eventually as a Drug Enforcement Administration agent. The valued undercover agent earned

Sadly, he was unable to fulfill that goal when he was discovered by the cartel. Members kidnapped, tortured, and killed Agent Camarena in February of 1985 before he was able to expose the criminal enterprise.

Another summer has come and gone, but the memories made by the youth at Hornell Area Concern for Youth (HACY) will last a lifetime! This year was packed with exciting activities and adventures, providing our young people with opportunities for exploration, learning, and pure summer fun.

One of the highlights was a trip to the Seneca Park Zoo in Rochester, NY. The vast array of animals, from majestic lions to playful penguins, sparked awe and wonder in our youngsters. They learned about different habitats, conservation efforts, and the importance of protecting wildlife. The trip wasn't just about the animals, though. The bus ride there and back provided a chance for socialization and bonding among the youth participants, creating lasting friendships.

Another fantastic event was HACY's participation in the Strong Kids Safe Kids event held in Bath, NY. This event focused on promoting healthy lifestyles and safety awareness. Our youth had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, from obstacle courses to bike safety demonstrations. The Strong Kids Safe Kids event not only provided a fun day out but also instilled valuable life lessons in our participants.

Beyond these specific events, HACY offered a plethora of other summer activities to keep the youth engaged. These included swimming trips, movie nights, and even volunteering opportunities within the community. The variety ensured there was something for everyone, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusivity within the HACY family.

Creating a Smooth Transition Back to School with Practical Tips for Families

The back-to-school season can be exciting, but it can also bring stress for both parents and children. New routines, academic pressures, and social changes can overwhelm this transition. Here are three healthy ways to ease back-to-school anxiety for parents and their children.

          Establish a Consistent Routine

Establishing a consistent routine is one of the most effective ways to reduce back-to-school stress. A predictable schedule helps parents and children feel more in control and less anxious about the unknowns of the school year.

For Kids:

Bedtime and Wake-Up Times: Start setting regular bedtimes and wake-up times at least a week before school starts. This helps kids adjust their internal clocks and makes the first day back less of a shock.

Morning Routine: Practice the morning routine a few times before school begins. This includes getting dressed, eating breakfast, and gathering school supplies. A calm, unhurried morning sets a positive tone for the day.

          For Parents:

Organize the Evening Before: Prepare lunches, pack backpacks, and lay out clothes the night before. This reduces the morning rush and helps parents feel more organized.

Create a Family Calendar: Use a family calendar to track school events, extracurricular activities, and other commitments. This keeps everyone on the same page and reduces last-minute surprises that can cause stress.

Open Lines of Communication

Maintaining open communication is vital to managing stress for both parents and kids. When families talk openly about their feelings, it helps to normalize the anxiety that often comes with going back to school.

For Kids:

Check-Ins: Regularly check in with your child about how they’re feeling. Ask specific questions like, “What are you looking forward to?” or “Is there anything you’re worried about?” This shows them that it’s okay to have mixed feelings.

Problem-Solving Together: If your child expresses concerns, work together to find solutions. For example, if they’re worried about making friends, role-play different social scenarios to build their confidence.

          For Parents:

Express Your Feelings Too: It’s okay for parents to acknowledge their stress. Share your feelings in an age-appropriate way to show your kids that it’s normal for everyone to feel nervous sometimes.

Stay Positive: Focus on the positives of returning to school, such as seeing friends and learning new things. Your optimistic outlook can help set the tone for your children.

Prioritize Self-Case and Relaxation

Social media is an integral part of teenagers’ lives. While it offers valuable opportunities for connection, creativity, and learning, it also poses risks that can impact their mental and emotional well-being. Hornell Are Concern for Youth is dedicated to helping young people navigate this complex landscape with confidence and care. Here’s how we can help our teens develop healthy social media habits.

Understanding the Impact of Social Media

Social media can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it provides a platform for self-expression, networking, and staying informed. On the other hand, excessive use can lead to issues such as cyberbullying, anxiety, depression, and a distorted sense of reality. Awareness of these potential impacts is the first step toward fostering a healthier relationship with social media.

Promoting Balance and Moderation

Encouraging teens to balance their online and offline lives is crucial. Setting reasonable limits on screen time helps prevent the adverse effects of excessive use. Here are a few strategies to promote balance:

Set Boundaries: Encourage teens to establish specific times for social media use, such as after homework or during weekends.

Tech-Free Zones: Designate specific areas of the home, like the dining room or bedrooms, as tech-free zones to promote face-to-face interactions.

Scheduled Breaks: Implement regular breaks from screens to engage in physical activities, hobbies or spending time with family and friends.

Fostering Positive Engagement

It’s not just about how much time teens spend on social media but also how they use it. Encouraging positive engagement can enhance their online experience and well-being:

Follow Positive Influences: Help teens curate their social media feeds by following accounts that promote positivity, education, and inspiration.

Be Mindful of Content: Teach teens to be critical of the content they consume and share. Encourage them to ask questions like, “Is this true?” and “How does this make me feel?”

Promote Authenticity: Urge teens to be authentic to themselves online. Remind them that they don’t need to present a perfect image to be valued and accepted.

Building Digital Literacy

Equipping teens with the skills to navigate social media safely and responsibly is essential. Digital literacy includes understanding privacy settings, recognizing misinformation, and handling online conflicts. Here’s how to build these skills:

Privacy Education: Teach teens about protecting personal information and using privacy settings to control who can see their posts.

Critical Thinking: Encourage teens to question online sources' credibility and verify information before sharing it.

Conflict Resolution: Equip teens with strategies to handle cyberbullying and online disagreements constructively. Encourage them to seek help from trusted adults when needed.

Encouraging Open Communication

Maintaining open lines of communication between teens and parents or guardians is vital. Teens should feel comfortable discussing their online experiences without fear of judgment or punishment. Here are some tips to foster open dialogue:

Active Listening: Show genuine interest in their online activities and listen without immediate criticism.

Share Experiences: Share your own online experiences and mistakes to create a relatable and trusting environment.

Collaborative Approach: Work together to set guidelines for social media use, making teens feel involved and respected in the decision-making process.

Social media is a powerful tool that, when used wisely, can enrich teenagers’ lives. By promoting balance, fostering positive engagement, building digital literacy, and encouraging open communication, we can help our teens navigate the digital landscape safely and healthily.
The State of Adolescent Health in the US: Challenges and Opportunities

Adolescence is a critical period of growth and development, marked by significant physical, emotional, and social changes. In the United States, adolescents face a unique set of health challenges that can have long-lasting effects on their well-being. From mental health issues to substance abuse and sexual health, understanding the current state of adolescent health is crucial for addressing these challenges effectively.

Youth health in the United States is a complex and multifaceted issue that requires attention and action. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), teens ages 10-19 make up the U.S. about 13% of the population. Still, they make up a significant portion of the nation’s healthcare burden (1)

One of the main concerns in adolescent health is mental health. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) reports that teens in the U.S. approximately 20% of the population develops mental illness each year(2). Factors such as academic stress, social media use, and exposure to violence may contribute to mental health developmental issues in this age group.

Another concern among youths is drug abuse. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) states that repetitive drug use begins in adolescence, with many youth using drugs and alcohol (3). This can lead to serious health problems results, including drug abuse and overdose.

Sexual health is also an important issue for teens. The CDC reports that nearly half of all new sexually transmitted infections (STIs) occur in adolescents ages 15-24 (4). Access to comprehensive sex education and health care is essential to addressing and providing this issue youth have developed positive behaviors.

Despite these challenges, there are opportunities to improve adolescent health in the United States. Prevention programs, early intervention, and access to health services can all help address the underlying factors that contribute to positive health outcomes among adolescents By prioritizing and funding adolescent health and investing in evidence-based interventions, we can ensure that this generation grows up to be healthy and thriving adults.

In conclusion, adolescent health in the United States is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive and integrated approach. By addressing the underlying causes of adverse health outcomes and investing in preventive programs, we can improve the health and well-being of youth nationwide.

Navigating Change: Trends Reshaping the Landscape of Middle and High School Education

One major trend in American education in grades 6-12 has been the integration of technology. With the proliferation of digital tools and online resources, educators increasingly incorporate technology into their teaching methods to enhance student learning. Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) are being used to create immersive learning experiences, while educational apps and software help personalize learning and provide feedback to students quickly. Another major step is the shift towards personalized learning. Recognizing that students have different learning styles and behaviors, educators adopt strategies to tailor instruction to each student. This can include project-based learning, mastery-based learning, and differentiated learning, allowing students to learn at their own pace and focus on areas where more support is needed.

These trends are supported by research showing that personalized learning can lead to improved learning outcomes and student engagement. A report by the RAND Corporation suggests that individualized learning approaches can lead to significant gains in student achievement, especially in mathematics and reading(1). In addition on top of, a study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology found that students in classrooms with individualized learning styles reported greater gains in motivation and engagement (2).

In conclusion, trends shaping instructional design in grades 6-12 in the United States indicate a shift toward more personalized and technology-driven approaches. By embracing these factors, educators can create engaging and highly effective learning environments that meet the diverse needs of students in today’s digital age.
